アイルランドでハロウィーンは昔からあるお祭りです!

Halloween is an ancient fetival in Ireland

それは「サーワン・オールハロータイド」と言いました
It was called Samhain Hallowtide

その意味は「死人の祝宴」！

It means banquet for the dead!

死者の魂が現世に帰って来ます。
It is a time when the dead souls return to the mortal world

８世紀にカトリック教会は１１月１日をオールセインツデー（万聖節）にしました。
In in 8th Century the Catholic Church made Novermber 1st "All Saints Day"

万聖節は死んだ聖人のための記念日です！
It is a day to commemorate the dead saints

その前夜はオールハローズ前夜になりました！
The night before was called All Hallows Eve!!

時を経て、ハロウィーンになりました！！
Over the years it became Halloween!!!

面白いね
Interesting eh!?

アイルランドでは色んなハロウィーンの習慣があります
In Ireland there are a lot of unusual Halloween customs!

一番有名なのは大かがり火だね

The most famous of course is the Bonfire

大かがり火はケルトの火の祝典でした
It is an old Celtic celebration

ハロウィーンの大かがり火は未来の恋人や夫か妻の夢を見るものだった
People gathered and thought about their future loved ones!!

昔のアイルランドでは大かがり火の中に自分の髪の毛を入れて、将来の恋愛を考えました
People used to cut a lock of their hair and throw it into the fire and think about their future love!

今年僕もそうしよう（笑）
I think I should do that this year!! LOL

他にも面白い習慣がいっぱいあるよ
There are other interesting customs too!!

目隠しされた女の子が野原に出て、一番最初に見たキャベツを採って、

Girls would be blindfolded and led out into a field, where they had to pick the first cabbage they found!

キャベツの根に沢山の土が付いていたら、未来の結婚相手がお金持ちの人です。

If there was a lot of soil attached to the cabbage roots, then her future husband would be rich!!

そしてキャベツを食べると、味で彼はどんな性格の人か分かると言い伝えがあります。辛いか甘いか・・・！！！（笑）
Then, she ate the cabbage and could tell her husbands character bythe taste of the cabbage...sweet or bitter!!! LOL

ジャック・オ・ランタンの習慣もアイルランドからきました。
The famous Jack-o-Lantern is an Irish tradition too!

さすらいの鍛冶屋の呪われた魂を寄せ付けない為に家の窓にジャック・オ・ランタンをおきました。
It was put it the window sill to keep the soul of the wandering blacksmith away!!

その時ジャック・オ・ランタンはカボチャじゃなかった！
In Ireland back then, jack-o-lanterns were not pumpkins!!

カブだったんだよ！！！！

They were TURNIPS!!!

１９世紀に何百万人ものアイルランド人がアメリカに移住する時にその習慣を持って行きました。
When masses of Irish emigrated to the USA in the 19th Century, they brought this tradition with them!

でもアメリカではカブが少なくて、カブの変わりにカボチャを使い始めた！！

But there was a short supply of turnips in the States so they started to use pumplins instead!

ハロウィーンは本当に面白い祝日だね！！
Halloween really is an interesting feast eh!?
